During the
period of the Summer School, there are many cultural and sport events in the
Lugano region and in Ticino (the Swiss
Canton in which
the Università della Svizzera Italiana is located), most of them free. The web
site of Lugano Tourism offers a current
events calendar that allows you to specify the dates and type of events
that you would like to have listed. Some major events that usually take place
in Lugano or other Ticino locations in the months of June and July are the following:

Lugano Festival: A series of classical music events (evening concerts with world renowned soloists and orchestras in Lugano's Palazzo dei Congressi), from April to June. |

Ceresio Estate: Free evening concerts featuring chamber music with emerging musicians and organized around special themes (entire summer season from June to September, in different places in the Lugano region) |

|
Boat cruises .During the day, try one of the relaxing boat roundtrips to some of the lovely villages on the borders of Lake Lugano, such as Morcote, Gandria, Ponte Tresa, and others. During summer nights (June – August) there are also night cruises with music (jazz, folclore, dancing). |

Poestate: Poetry Festival in the city centre (early June, around the Piazza della Riforma)) |

Settimane Musicali di Lugano: many evening classical music concerts performed in Lugano's most suggestive settings and with the participation of orchestras and soloists of European renown (from June to August) |

Lungolago ai Pedoni e LuganEstate: Evening entertainment along the Lugano lakeside every Friday and Saturday evening: cabaret, classical music, Latin-American music, events for both the young and old (the road is closed to vehicular traffic, mid-June – August) |

Sailing Match-Race in the Gulf: regatta in the bay of Lugano (June) |

Ascona New Orleans Jazz Festival: 10 days of jazz in the streets, bars and restaurants of Ascona (last week of June - early July) |

National Day grand fireworks display in the Lugano bay (1 August) |

|
Locarno International Film Festival: international film festival in the historical setting of Locarno's Piazza Grande, with one of the world's largest (early August) |

Arts exhibitions in the Museo Cantonale d'Arte Lugano , in the Museo d'Arte Moderna, and in the Villa Ciani (throughout the summer). Also of interest is the Herman Hesse Museum in Montagnola near Lugano. Additional museums in Lugano and environment can be found here. |
